Craig Ellis was an unemployed subcontractor in the building industry when he decided that sitting at home was not going to get him a job so he turned to self employment to secure himself a future. He established his company, Yorkshire Paveworks in September 2009 providing affordable, quality work for both domestic and commercial contracts.
Ambitions for the business have since expanded and through good networking and a determination to succeed, Craig from Moorends, has exceeded his original goal of specialising in residential paving work, he also carries out all aspects of building works including block paving and driveways, ground works, new builds and disabled adaptations to local residential homes.
Since expanding, a business advisor has helped the business with marketing, business planning, VAT registration, book keeping and tax requirements and Craig has received support from his business advisor on management issues and employment law.
Yorkshire Paveworks were initially helped by Success Doncaster through the ‘InBusiness’ initiative situated within Doncaster Market. This initiative allows new businesses to test trade and showcase their business on a stall within the wool market prior to fully launching their business.
In order to create a professional attitude to running his business, Craig has taken full advantage of the support and resources available from Success Doncaster by also attending a business start-up course.
Craig said: “Some people may say that turning to self employment was a risky decision especially in this economic climate. However, the support on offer from the Success Doncaster programme has made this much easier and has provided me with more confidence in running my own business.”
Business is certainly booming, so much so that he has now secured business premises in Thorne and is employing subcontractors to assist him on large building contracts.
