Urban Bar & Lounge

Urban Bar and Lounge

A LOCAL entrepreneur has recently taken on a new project which has seen the late Great Northern pub, previously The Saracens Head, Cleveland Street, Doncaster brought back to life.

Paul Roidl, aged only 27 has revamped, revived and re-opened the town centre pub, giving it the new name of Urban Bar & Grill. The pub promises to offer as much excitement and versatility as the competing trendy bars without compromising its heritage and Paul wants it to be as much a favourite with the regulars, bringing that sense of being in your local to the town centre! There is no need to go home early either, they are open until 3am on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Since the age of 15, Paul has worked in the catering and leisure industry, but always making money for other people, he decided to try it for himself. Three years ago Paul and his brother took the plunge and decided to open their own café in Rossington, Class 21. His brother still runs the café, leaving Paul to concentrate on ensuring the pub is a success.

Paul has many forward thinking ideas to bring the place and the people back together. Along with a traditional breakfast and lunchtime menu, serving food from 9am through until 3pm, he has some great things planned for the future.

“Success Doncaster has been a tremendous help to me since I decided to go into business. I have found there has always been someone to turn to for support and advice when I have needed it” said Paul.

The pub currently operates with a team of nine employees which is sure to increase over the coming weeks as more people start to experience just what they have to offer. Their new facebook page is attracting between 10 and 15 new additions every week and they currently have over 1500 friends.

Keep your eyes peeled for competition prizes, birthday specials, music nights and the increasingly popular Steinglass! Urban Bar & Grill is the only pub in Doncaster offering customers a Steinglass, which holds the equivalent of two pints – saving you precious time standing at the bar and it means not having to refill as often!

Paul is really looking forward to running his own pub and being part of the Doncaster social scene and has lost count of the amount of people who have congratulated him on the re-opening of the pub.

We asked Paul a few questions about being your own boss:

Who/what was your inspiration for starting in business?

I have two main inspirations really. My son being the first, as a single father I had to finish my previous job as I needed a job that would fit in with being able to take care of my son and secondly, earning money to line other peoples pockets inspired me to go out there and start earning it for myself!

What has been the biggest challenge for you?

I am quite an impatient person and want everything to happen immediately. Trying to do too much too soon is perhaps my biggest challenge.

What do you like most about being your own boss?

Working for yourself means having to work very long hours, being totally committed to what you believe in and self motivation. Most of all, I feel very proud of what I have achieved so far.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start their own business?

Be realistic and be honest with yourself. Look for something a little bit different from the norm and establish your own identity. Oh… and don’t be scared to ask for help!

Future plans, where do you see yourself and your business this time next year?

My aim is to register Urban Bar & Lounge as a trademark and launch more pubs in other areas across the Yorkshire and Humber region.
