Terry Chipp Fine Art Paintings
Struggling with ill health and a loss of confidence, a lack of income and no prospects or space for his art, Terry Chipp met business buddy Karen Edwards through the Success Doncaster programme and got to work on changing the path forward for himself and his business, Terry Chipp Fine Art Paintings.
After initial contact, Karen felt Terry’s confidence was in need of a boost and pointed him in the direction of the Business Link Workshops to meet with other similar businesses. Here he chose to attend the ‘Getting Started’ and ‘Growing your new Business’ classes, both of which he found extremely useful and relevant.
The confidence he gained from these classes coupled with an invitation to attend and International Artist’s Colony in America led to a brighter looking future for Terry and his fine art.
Jetting off to Wilmington North Carolina where he was the only UK invitee for two weeks of intensive painting followed by an exhibition of works created, Terry made full advantage of the opportunity and two of his pieces were sold at auction for a total of $6,500 to raise monies for children living in deprived communities across the world.
Following his trip to the USA, Terry had a new outlook on his work, feeling inspired by his journey he was ready to capitalise on his experience and new found ‘international artist’ status. He secured three days work and two commissions at the beginning of 2009 and this gave his new business a real kick start.
The real break through came for Terry when High Melton College allowed him use of one of the Incubation Unit facilities free of charge for his first year thanks to Business Buddy Karen and her contacts at Doncaster College.
Karen has also given Terry advice on research around what prospective customers want and signposted him to PRIME for help with Business Planning. She has suggested that he visits museums and galleries throughout South Yorkshire with a view to selling prints and cards. Together they have also looked at further ways of expanding his business including E-bay sales, Trade Fairs and advertising his teaching skills as a regular income.
The issues that were facing Terry have now been completely addressed and he now has a much more positive attitude towards his work and his confidence has lifted greatly. He is now enjoying not only his space at High Melton College but also the company of like-minded businesses.
