Sweet Bizarre
The current economic climate meant that Karl Brough was stuck in a job that he felt was not leading anywhere and was finding it difficult to find a new career. Feeling downbeat and frustrated, Karl decided to try his hand at self employment and began selling sweets and confectionary on Oldcotes market.
Whilst working on the stall, Karl realised the potential of the business and started researching and working on his own business idea. He approached Success Doncaster for advice and support and was referred to one of the programme’s business advisors. He received help with book keeping, how to find suppliers and general pricing of products. Karl was also supported in arranging visits to call centres, factories and local events where he could sell his products and help to raise awareness of his new business venture.
Karl said: “I spotted a gap in the market whilst working in a call centre and quickly realised there was a market for sweets and confectionary. I decided this was the perfect opportunity to start my own business.”
Karl continued: “Although I already had the business idea to create Sweet Bizarre, I did not have all the business know how I needed to make it a viable option. With the help of Success Doncaster I have managed to get the business off the ground and having initially tested the business on a market stall, I now work full time running my own mobile sweet store.”
The increasing success of Sweet Bizarre has allowed Karl to leave his job in telesales to go full time working for himself – a decision Karl is more than thrilled with. His mobile van visits locations throughout Doncaster and is stocked with a variety of delicious sweets and confectionary.
As Sweet Bizarre continues to grow, Karl is safe in the knowledge that he will have continued support from Success Doncaster in expanding his business.
