Turkuaz

Starting a business is trying at the best of times, but to start a business at the height of the recession and turning it into a success is a lot easier said than done. And that is exactly what Turkish restaurant Turkuaz managed to achieve.

Turkuaz was set up in July 2009 by Kenan Ekiztas, 37, to offer the finest in Turkish cuisine. With a background of 19 years in the food industry, Kenan is a trained chef who has worked in fast-paced and fine-dining London restaurants.

Based on Netherhall Road in Doncaster Town Centre, Turkuaz Bar and Grill is a family-run restaurant with a lively atmosphere. The food, popular with people of all backgrounds, is accompanied by music, whilst special occasions of belly dancing complete the Turkish experience.

Reputation of the establishment has spread by word of mouth resulting in a two-week notice to book a table at the weekend. And this is without Turkuaz undertaking any advertising.
Kenan said: “We opened the restaurant at a very difficult trading time. But we are doing well because of what we do, and the support of family and staff that put in a lot of hard work.”
Being new to business, Kenan had start-up advice from a specialist business advisor who helped him with general business advice and was available to answer any specific questions Kenan ever had. He also received ongoing support on a regular basis.

Turkuaz, which stands for ‘Turquoise’ in Turkish, now employs six full-time staff and caters to a large number of customers a week.

Kenan moved to Doncaster 12 years ago to be close to family. He now lives here with his wife and five children. His future ambitions are to expand the Turkish experience ‘Turkuaz’ to other cities.
