Shaun Gravel
After leaving a special school without taking any examinations, Shaun Gravel managed to find work on the railway. Here he trained as a Trackman working on live rail lines and also within the yard. Shaun enjoyed his job so much he would often work six or seven days a week to earn the best living for his young family and provide for their future.
After he was made redundant, Shaun was enthusiastic about finding employment as soon as possible. He joined Jobmates and was assisted in creating a CV to enable him to apply for a number of jobs he is able to do.
Shaun’s Personal Track Safety Card (PTS), needed to work on the railway, was due to run out and because of his health circumstances he needed to have a medical as well when renewing it. Financial constraints meant that he could not fund all of this as the approximate cost was around £300. After discussions with his Jobmate, Shaun was advised to put an application in to the barrier breaker fund for the cost of the PTS renewal course and he managed to scrape together the cost of the medical and associated reports.
After successfully passing his medical and his PTS renewal, he has found a greater level of confidence, particularly as he was starting to feel down about his prospects. Shaun regularly rings employers, friends and acquaintances seeking work. He travels around the borough and out of the area seeking jobs. He has handed in over 50 applications and speculative letters/ CVs to various companies.
Shaun feels that he has had lots of help and support through job mates and this has helped him through some of the difficult times such as receiving knock backs from employers, or not even hearing at all from applications.
Shaun remains positive and upbeat, particularly now he has renewed his medical and PTS card, this was a major barrier that he has overcome and he is ready for the illusive job that both he and his Jobmate are sure is just around the corner.
