La Petite Cour
In France, ‘La Petite Cour’ means The Little Courtyard and that is exactly what this new business boasts operating from its premises in Tickhill. A quaint coffee shop and art gallery, La Petite Cour offers its customers the very best in local goods and traditional produce.
Business owner Chris Leigh opened La Petit Cour in July 2010 and specialises in drinks such as Valentino coffee, English teas, old fashioned Lemonade, Dandelion & Burdock all served with a selection of homemade cupcakes, if desired. The cupcakes are specially designed, baked and supplied by another local business - Cupcake Sensations.
Success Doncaster has supported Chris through the business start-up process and has helped with providing new contacts and local supplier information as well as providing access to the Success Doncaster loan fund.
La Petite Cour also display contemporary and classical prints, framed and canvas. The venue is fully licensed and is also available for private functions, parties and champagne receptions at weekends and evenings.
Who / what was your inspiration for starting in business?
I was tired of employers exploiting my services and I decided that self employment was the way forward for me. I don’t have the traditional qualifications employers look for so I decided that being my own boss was the best option for success.
What has been the biggest challenge for you?
When I initially wanted to start my business the high street banks were reluctant to provide a loan and I was finding it very difficult to raise the capital needed. A friend recommended Success Doncaster and I got in touch. My business adviser helped with my application from the Loan Fund and also helped with producing a business plan, forecasting and cash flow.
What do you like most about being your own boss?
It gives me enormous satisfaction to know that I’ve achieved something and it is all mine. I can really see the fruits of my hard work and labour. I also like the flexibility and the fact I can make myself a drink and a cake whenever I fancy is a real bonus!
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start their own business?
Anyone with a good business idea should go for it and seek as much advice and help from business service providers such as Success Doncaster.
Future plans, where do you see yourself and your business this time next year?
Doing the same thing but on a bigger scale. I would like to open another coffee shop with enough space for baking and selling my own produce.
