Kidz R Us in Scawthorpe specialises in looking after autistic children, but owner Janice Jinks has had a difficult time over past few years. Janice’s premises were badly affected by flooding in 2007 and although she was insured, sorting out the damage cost her a lot of money.
The economic downturn has also affected business as people have less money to spend on childminding. But Success Doncaster has been on hand to give advice on how to build-up Janice’s business and compete in these difficult times.
Through the aid of the Business Buddies strand of the programme, Janice was put in touch with a personal buddy who gave her business advice, supported her with marketing and gave advice on responsibilities and obligations of employers.
Janice said “My business buddy has helped me tremendously. She has given me ideas on how to enhance my business and put me in touch with numerous professionals who’ve given me advice.”
Janice has also joined a national childminding network, which is already helping. She has also constructed a sensory room and sensory garden for the children she looks after. Janice is now looking for sponsorship from local businesses to help improve both of these features.
The hard work that Janice puts into her business has been commended by a nationally recognised award from 4children. She received joint first prize for Childminder of the Year 2009 at a high profile gala event held in London hosted by TV and Radio star, Neil Fox.
