After years of working in Doncaster salons, Julia Reddy realised there would be a potential market for a portable salon with ease of mobility. Taking into account the essential needs for mobile stylists, Julia developed the Portable Salon, a self-contained portable work station consisting of a height-adjustable mirror, an anti-static floor mat and aluminium folding lightweight chair – all packaged neatly in a compact, lightweight carry case with shoulder strap.

The unique product is specifically designed for freelance mobile hairdressers, beauty therapists, stylists and make up artists who require a simple and easy to deploy workstation for use in people’s homes, to promote and maintain a professional image. It can also be used for fashion shows, film shoots, residential homes and hair and beauty wholesalers.

Success Doncaster helped Julia through the Business Buddy scheme, where she received guidance on product development and dealt with issues with prototypes and pricing strategies.

Julia said: “Life is great at the moment – it’s never dull juggling a new business venture, still hairdressing two days a week and taking care of my two young children. I absolutely love it. I have learnt so much. I have the confidence to talk to wholesalers and businesses and sell my product internationally. And now I’m going back into the classroom talking to students about freelance hairdressing and promoting my product.”

Export opportunities are being actively pursued to market the Portable Salon on a global scale and Julia is constantly demonstrating considerable resourcefulness and persistence to build her business proposition. She has developed effective networks with accountants and business support organisations and highlighted her passion for the product when she personally presents the opportunity to decision makers interested in the Portable Salon.
