With over 12 years designing and developing websites for blue chip companies including BT and Europcar UK, Andy Roberts felt he had the range of skills and experience required to start his own web design business.
Exact Web Solutions was launched in August 2009, focusing on delivering creative, usable and high quality web sites to clients in Doncaster and the surrounding regions.
Andy first became aware of CIDA and Success Doncaster whist attending a business marketing event at Doncaster Racecourse and felt that the 1 to 1 mentoring process would provide valuable help and support in the early stages of the start-up process.
Following an initial meeting to determine the areas Andy needed help and advice, Alexis Bradbury, Managing Director of The Mix Marketing Ltd was suggested as the CIDA mentor most appropriate to provide support.
The mentoring process consisted of 4 x 3 hour meetings at Andy’s office, the first primarily to help Alexis understand his background and skills and the rest to devise a strategy for the business during the first year and then to monitor the implementation of various aspect during the next few months.
Andy said: “Business has grown steadily yet consistently during my first 9 months of trading and new partnerships formed with local businesses, in both support and supplier roles. Referrals continue to be the main source of new projects but partnerships are definitely something I will continue to work towards and something I see as key to achieving a solid business.
“The mentoring process taught me to analyze everything I do in detail and from my customers’ perspective rather than doing something just because I think it’s a good idea. What do my clients require and how can I service their needs? Is now a question I constantly ask myself”.
“I have also become very aware of streamlining processes to help save time, as a sole employee it is very easy to work long hours which is fine but family life is important too.”
Andy is now confident that his business has a place in the crowded local market; the results are starting to show through the referrals and partnerships.
“I am also optimistic that as my reputation for delivering high quality websites grows the financial rewards will come too.”
