Barber B's
Success Doncaster is not just about offering business support, the programme can also help individuals to turn their life around. Ryan Backhouse is an excellent example of someone who has grabbed an opportunity, worked hard with it and done just this.
Barber B’s is a men’s barber based within New Bodies Gym just off Wheatley Hall Road. Whilst serving time in prison, Ryan trained to be a barber. He trained for an NVQ in men’s hairdressing and soon realised he actually enjoyed it. This led him to the dream of one day owning his own barbers shop.
On his release, Ryan was determined to turn his life around and began working as a barber, a position which he was very grateful for and which enabled him to gain work experience whilst building up his own client base.
During the summer whilst he was working out in the gym, Ryan had the idea that this would be the perfect location to set up his own hair cutting business. The gym had a captive audience with plenty of people visiting on a regular basis: he didn’t hesitate in speaking to the gym owner. After agreeing terms, Ryan was thrilled to be able to start planning his business and set about building his own salon/shop.
Success Doncaster was on hand to help Ryan start his business by ensuring he had all the correct knowledge to set up, he also had a small amount of financial support through the Enterprise Chest. Ryan and his advisor looked at different aspects of the business, in particular tax returns, accounts and national insurance issues.
Ryan said: “When I was in prison I had the dream of one day opening my own Barber shop. Thanks to the support I have received from the Success Doncaster programme and a lot of my own hard work and determination, I have managed to fulfil my dream.”
Business is going well for Ryan with his customer base growing and he also now stocks hair products for customers to buy.
At first Ryan was embarrassed about his past and being in prison was something he didn’t want people to know about. Now he wants others who may be or have been in a similar situation, to read this and feel inspired and encouraged that they too can turn a negative into a positive. Ryan is very proud of what he has achieved and how he has turned his life around!
