Abbeyfield Electrical

Abbeyfield Electrical

Finningley electrician Peter Benton decided that rather than work for somebody else, he would set up his own business. He started his company, Abbeyfield Electrical eighteen months ago and also took on his son, Chris, as an apprentice whilst continuing with his studies at Doncaster College.

Pete, who is 44, has a wealth of experience working as an electrician having started out as an apprentice himself when he was just 16, although this is the first time he has ever ventured into working for himself

Having had no previous experience in running a business, Peter approached Success Doncaster for assistance and as a pre-start business was referred to an Enterprise Coach who provided him with general business and training advice and helped him with applying for an enterprise grant to help fund the initial costs of setting up his business. Continuing with the support from the Success Doncaster programme, Pete has since received further specialist support from a Business Buddy with the financial aspects of running his business.

Hard work certainly does run in the family. In November, Chris won the JTL Apprentice of the Year award representing the South Yorkshire region. His commitment and attitude to his academic studies alongside his quality workmanship managed to impress the panel of judges and he was crowned the winner.

We asked Pete a few questions on being your own boss and this is what he said:

Who / what was your inspiration for starting in business?
It was my son when he turned 16 and we asked him what he wanted to do when he left school. His twin, Stephanie, wanted to continue on to further education and study graphics and photography. Chris has a much more practical and hands on approach and was looking for an apprenticeship. Being my own boss created the perfect opportunity for him.

What has been the biggest challenge for you?
Obtaining work, the current economic climate is making it very difficult for any small business to secure and maintain enough work to keep us going. Building our reputation and letting people know about our services has also been quite a challenge.

What do you like most about being your own boss?
The flexibility to work the hours that suit me and being in control of my own future. There is no escaping the fact that it is very hard work and not as easy as people may think.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start their own business?
Speak to organisations such as Success Doncaster and obtain as much business advice as you can. Also, to research your competition and see how you can improve on the service that is already provided.

Future plans, where do you see yourself and your business this time next year?
Still here, still trading and trying to gain a better quality of living. It is very difficult in the small business sector at the moment but with continued hard work and perseverance, we are submitting tenders for work and remain positive that we have a promising year ahead of us!
