Reggae Jerk Centre
Chris Clayton graduated as a maths teacher in the Caribbean where he taught for 6 years. He then decided to apply for a work permit to teach in the UK, he was successful and arrived in 2001 and taught maths in this country for ten years until he was taken ill which resulted in him taking time off. Chris has since recovered but decided not to continue with his teaching profession and took redundancy in August last year.
One of Chris’s hobbies has always been cooking and whilst in the Caribbean he also undertook training in one of the Caribbean’s leading food and drink establishments. His real passion was to create a catering outlet that specialised in Caribbean cuisine offering food just like his grandmother and mother used to make. He wanted to use the secret recipes passed down through the family using secret herbs, special recipes and spices which provide the unique authentic Caribbean flavour.
Chris continued his passion for Caribbean cuisine and frequented Leeds carnival each year with a mobile stall selling “Reggae Style Jerk” Caribbean cuisine.
During one of his trips to Balby Library Chris enquired about Success Doncaster and was signposted to an Enterprise Coach who sat down with him and helped him develop his business idea further and prepared a business plan with him. The opportunity arose to test trade his business on a stall within the food hall for a period of 6 weeks, Chris grabbed the chance straight away.
Chris wanted to turn this hobby into reality and commenced test trading in September 2011. Due to the time scale he was constantly looking for other available opportunities and during this time he identified an outlet on Copley Road and following extensive refurbishment he opened the “Reggae Jerk Centre”just before Christmas offering quality authentic Caribbean cuisine.
Chris is still receiving support from Success Doncaster in developing a marketing strategy, resourcing staff and establishing policies and procedures.
He has a vision for creating a brand name “Reggae Jerk Centre” that is synonymous with authentic quality Caribbean taste. He is looking to establish the brand name in Doncaster and then branch out into neighbouring areas.
The restaurant provides an environment for customers of all ages and holds themed nights ensuring customers are able to immerse in the Caribbean culture at an affordable price.
Another vision is to create a tropical cocktail bar on the premises where customers can also enjoy mixed Caribbean beverages.
