LIFE (Leisure, Instruction, Fitness, Education)
LIFE is an exciting and unique business run by Michael McBurney that offers sports and arts activities to local residents, and particularly young people in Doncaster. LIFE encourages people to get active, and in turn aims to reduce anti social behaviour, underage drinking and inactiveness.
The highly qualified and friendly instructors offer a range of activities and workshops including presentation and performance training, team building activities and problem solving sessions.
LIFE also promotes physical activity and sport to bring young people together, develop communication skills and encourage working with others, all helping to improve life skills such as confidence and self belief.
With such a large project to deliver Michael needed help and approached Success Doncaster for help with developing a business plan and a financial plan. He was referred to an advisor and was further assisted with marketing LIFE and sourcing a grant.
Michael also found procurement opportunities and was given guidance on the processes involved when submitting procurement applications. LIFE successfully won a contract with the Primary Care Trust under the Enhanced Public Health, and a Doncaster Council European Social Fund contract to work with young people who are NEET (not in education, employment or training).
The work the company provide has also been recognised nationally and LIFE have been awarded the South Yorkshire Lifestyle Project of the Year 2008, the Innovative Project of the Year 2008, the Innovation in Enterprise Runner Up 2008 and the Sports Business of the Year 2009.
With an impressive number of achievements under their belt, it is no wonder business is thriving. More importantly, the work has had a significant impact on the lives of Doncaster residents and continues to engage with young people to improve their lifestyles.
