Doncaster took ‘top trumps’ at an awards ceremony for outstanding business performance in Yorkshire. Three Doncaster businesses scooped three of the four sector prizes being competed for and one then went on to be crowned the overall Business of the Year.
Doncaster Re-Furnish scooped the two awards - the category for ‘Enterprise through Innovation’ and the prestige title of ‘Business Of The Year’ at the Royal Armouries gala event in Leeds.
Doncaster Re-Furnish have diverted 26,000 items like fridges from being dumped in the ground at landfill sites and supplied more than 8,000 households with excellent recycled goods in the last year alone. The social enterprise – represented at the dinner by chief executive Joanne Ward and chairman Bob Fitzharris – was ecstatic with the win, saying they hope to continue with their success and expand further across the Yorkshire region.
Other Doncaster based winners at the event were: The Glow Company, who specialise in selling products that glow in the dark, winning the category for Fastest Growing Business and Force 10 Recruitment who specialise in finding jobs for ex forces personnel, scooping the ward for ‘Best New-Start’.
Now in it’s second year, The ‘Biz Awards’ which specialise in businesses from disadvantaged backgrounds and which recognise those who have taken the leap, fought the odds and become their own boss despite facing more challenges than the average person, is run jointly by Bradford Chamber, The Business Enterprise Fund, Yorkshire Forward and Business Link. Success Doncaster (LEGI) sponsored the ‘Fastest Growing Business’ award.
Mayor Martin Winter commented: “This is tremendous news and a real boost for the Doncaster business world. I am absolutely delighted that Doncaster had three winners out of the four categories, beating opposition from businesses in Leeds and Bradford.
