Mayor visits youth training scheme

Enhancement Training

February 2010

Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster, recently took time out of his schedule to see how a Doncaster business is helping troubled teens turn their lives around.  Enhancement Training, based in Balby, has been supported through Success Doncaster’s Business Buddies programme.

Enhancement Training works with 14-16 year olds who have been referred by schools or other agencies due to being partly or fully excluded from mainstream education.  The company gives them the opportunity to develop practical skills such as joinery, bricklaying and carpentry.  This helps them to get their lives back on track.

Natalie and Alun Perry started the venture in September 2009. Their philosophy is that some young people cannot, or choose not, to progress further in education but need an opportunity to develop their practical skills and provide them with a sense of achievement.

During his visit, Peter Davies spent time discussing the skills training being provided and also spent some time speaking to the young people working on carpentry tasks.

Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “It is great to see young people who have been excluded from mainstream education working hard and developing new skills. Learning a trade gives them a livelihood and the potential to make a success of their adult life.”

Natalie said, “We were delighted to welcome Peter Davies into our Company and felt that he has a greater understanding of what we are trying to achieve due to his previous career as a local teacher. The learners were pleased that he had taken the time to come along and speak to them about their training.”
