Build a better future with Steps to Success

January News 2012

TWO years of unemployment came to an end for one determined Doncaster man thanks to free advice from work and enterprise experts who are helping people to change their lives.

Bryan Rooth is now self-employed and running two new businesses after turning his ideas into reality with the help of Steps to Success. The project, funded by Success Doncaster and run by Doncaster West Development Trust (DWDT) helps people find work or start their own business by offering one-to-one support.

With considerable experience in the construction industry, Bryan, 40, considered self-employment following redundancy but was unsure about some aspects of the process. Supported by the Success Doncaster programme his Work and Enterprise Coach helped put together his business plan to enable him to achieve his dream of becoming his own boss.

He recently set up MAS Aggregate Supplies and MAS Construction based in Kirkhouse Green near Moss and has already secured several contracts.

His advisor worked closely with Bryan to research local competitors, create a pricing structure and find an accountant for his new venture.

“Bryan had a fantastic business idea, enthusiasm and experience but just needed to know about things like applying for an operator’s licence along with help using the internet,” explained the Work and Enterprise Coach. “Setting up two businesses after being out of work for so long is a massive achievement and shows just what people can do with their own commitment and support.”

Steps to Success offers a service in the heart of Doncaster communities with coaches based at Opportunity Centres around the borough. Meetings can also be arranged at other venues, which means staff are available when and where needed.

Success Doncaster has strong links with many specialist agencies and can signpost clients to other useful services, giving them the very best chance of success. To further boost their job prospects or tackle personal barriers, people can also access training and volunteering opportunities.

Anyone stuck in a rut or keen to gain new skills can find a host of practical initiatives at Doncaster West Development Trust. They hold a weekly job club and online computer basics and various training courses and workshops are all held free of charge to Doncaster residents.

Extensive guidance is also available from the Success Doncaster programme. Confidential support and advice is available, helping thousands of people across the borough in finding employment, establish further training programmes, start their own business or help to develop and grow an existing business.
