How to write a business plan

Writing a business plan can be a tricky task but it is essential to show off the potential your business has.  Outlined here is a short guide to what you should include.

1. Objectives

This section sets out why you are writing the business plan and a brief summary of what you intend to do.

2. Executive review

Here you will outline the whole plan, the product, the market etc. This section is particularly important if you require financial support.

3. Market analysis

This chapter will define the market, geographical area, consumer behaviour and customer segmentation. Remember to do your homework on this.

4. Demand analysis

This is where numbers start to come into play in your plan, you need to do an evaluation of potential and actual demand, future demand and evolution of demand.

5. Environmental Analysis

There are a number of factors that can influence the market place, Economic, Political, Legal etc.  Think about how this will affect your product and potential customers.

6. Company Analysis

This section should be a brief presentation of your company, history, management team, strengths and weaknesses for example.  Include information on how it can work and what are its capabilities.

7. Analysis of the Competition

Just as you analysed your own company, use this section to analyse your competitors.  Be thorough and remember to include how you will do things differently.

8. Marketing Strategy

Once you have identified your market, you need to set out how you will enter it, product, price, distribution, promotion etc.  Be thorough without using overly technical jargon.

9. Success Factors

This section is one of the most important sections of your plan as it contains the summary of why your project will be a success. Think of a unique selling point of your product.

10. Financial Analysis

Here you will detail the financial figures of your business.  Things you need to detail here will include Cost projections, sales projections, Cash flow, Profit and Loss statements and balance sheets.  Including graphs will make for easier reading.

11. Finance

Lay out what financial backing you will need in this section.  Don't just think about now, consider any future investment too.  Consider business associates,e external investors, finance companies and public grants.

12. Conclusion

Conclude your plan by highlighting the main items that point to the success of your plan.  Keep it brief but let the reader know of your optimism for your business without exaggerating.

You should aim for your business plan to be around 25 pages long, this way it is not too long for the reader to take in, but it will still contain enough relevant information.
